![]() ![]() The thing is they’re not operating as a team. They told them their goal in life, the Chosen, is to hunt down and destroy XCOM. The idea is that the aliens created these characters to be perfect champions. The hunter is more of a long-range sniper. The assassin uses stealth and her swords. They’ll jump into missions, and you’ll have to fight them. You’ll fight them multiple times over the course of the game. Solomon: The Chosen are kind of like really special, powerful leaders of the alien army. GamesBeat: So, you have the alien enemy, which is somehow aligned with these human-like enemies? We’ve added the sense of important people talking about this, commenting on the things you do. Sometimes, you’d be fighting for the world, but you couldn’t hear voices talking about it. ![]() Overall, the initial goal for us was to add a lot of personality to XCOM. There are lots of new voices in the game in addition, of course, to all the gameplay features. They’ll be sending out propaganda for what you just did. No one was wounded.” You get a sense from that side, and then in the base, if you go to the bar, we have Resistance Radio, which is the resistance side of things. They’ll say, “Don’t worry, that was just a small dissident faction. While you’re flying back, we have the voice of the Advent, the government controlling Earth, trying to spin what you just did for them. We even have little details we’ve added where - after a mission you fly back to the base. Those factions have leaders that are also personalities, who will also comment on how things are going. Now, we have three powerful resistance factions that can join with XCOM and counter each of the Chosen. They’re meant to be the counters for the Chosen, the three big enemies. We also have these factions, three resistance groups. They’ll comment on achievements you’ve had - if they’re trying to hunt you down, if you’ve succeed against them. On the strategy layer, they’ll comment on things you do there. Going all in is a significant commitment, but a rewarding challenge if completed-one that truly feels like battling against a mighty invasion force with every scrap of humanity's being.Solomon: Not exactly. Things still take much longer to complete than vanilla Enemy Within-I could finish EW's campaign in five to 10 sittings, while in that same amount of time I barely made a dent in TNSLW's alien assault-but it's definitely more forgiving than the full Long War experience. One of my favorite aspects of Long War is an option called The Not So Long War, which lets you play a campaign with all of *The Long War's *class and item changes but without quite as much of a stretch on everything's completion time. These mind blasts and psychic takedowns are critical in combating another another great change Long War makes: the alien invaders now also gather resources and research technologies of their own, growing stronger over time if you don't strategize carefully and intervene when necessary. The Long War also gives you access to psionic powers significantly earlier in the game, and a much larger tree of psionic powers to develop. XCOM is a war of attrition, and what once took mere (in-game) hours or days now takes weeks or months to complete-while enemy attacks are as frequent as ever. The completion time for training your soldiers, researching projects, building facilities and items-pretty much everything across the board-has been ramped up considerably. Long War takes things to another level entirely. XCOM is a difficult game to begin with, punishingly so on everything but the easiest setting. The core idea behind The Long War is to make the XCOM experience-commanding Earth's last line of defense against an alien invasion-more challenging, more rewarding, and as the name suggests, longer. And yes, the mod's been out in beta for more than a year, but a recent major patch added even more content, features, and tweaks. Yes, there's a version for Enemy Unknown too, but it isn't nearly as good. XCOM: Long War is a free mod for XCOM: Enemy Within that maintains the core gameplay but overhauls the entire system to add a depth and breadth of soldier customization, strategic options, and much more. And now there's a mod that's so good it makes the expansion pack feel like a tired retread. Its first expansion pack, Enemy Within, added so much amazing content that it made playing the game an entirely new experience. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a great tactical game from Firaxis games. ![]()
